Why continuing the legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright is so meaningful to me

George Meyer

To describe what Taliesin West is to me, I will start and end with the same thought—there is nothing like Taliesin West for me, nothing...

The desert is such an unusual place in its extremism. It is both harsh and beautiful. I enjoy walking up the road from Susan's house (one of the many dotting the landscape on the periphery of the Taliesin West property) carefully staying on the trail so as not to get stuck with a cholla sticker. It is quiet but not without sounds—birds, wind, something unseen scampering through the underbrush. That Wright thought that this was a good place to reinvent himself during a major economic downturn with a bunch of essentially kids: fascinating.

Another walk that is very special to me—coming toward the main buildings as the sun is setting. The immense sky, the endless views, the design of the buildings, the calmness. I imagine that I could live at Taliesin West and not have the same experience twice—either at sunrise or sunset. Though I have visited Taliesin and walked down the country roads comprising the Taliesin property, there is still nothing like Taliesin West for me, nothing.

George Meyer is a longtime supporter of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and speaks often of the impact that Frank Lloyd Wright has had, and continues to have, on his life. Whether through the reminiscence of experience shared above or in the additional thoughts here: “There is a magic you feel at Taliesin West, in the desert.” “Some of my most meaningful memories center around interaction with Fellows, dinner with Cornelia Brierly and my ongoing friendship with Indira Berndtson, in seeing firsthand Pedro Guerrero’s film in the cabaret.” George has been able to speak to the very essence of Frank Lloyd Wright’s desire to inspire meaningful connections with art, nature and each other…values at the very core of the Foundation and its mission today. George and his husband, Gregory, have assured the continuation of this mission through a gift in their estate plan.

We hope you will be moved to consider a gift through your own estate plan.
